Lyon’s thesis was to identify the truly unique aspects of the Church’s efforts to pioneer the great American West. Latter-day Saints were not, for example, the first group to go west, they did not pioneer any of the major routes they followed, nor did their members comprise the majority of individuals who traversed the continent.
